Assignment 4B: U.S. Patent Analysis

Hi everyone,

So I'm here to explain Claim #1 of Patent #8046721, otherwise known as the slide-to-unlock filed by Apple.

Claim 1 details the "method" of the slide-to-unlock function:

  • First, the user makes contact with the slide-to-unlock image on the screen.
  • Then, the user moves the unlock image--defined as a graphical, interactive UI object--in the direction the image instructs.
  • Finally, the screen is unlocked if the movement initiated by the user results in the movement of the unlock image from the "first pre-defined location to a predefined unlock region" (left to right typically) on the screen.
As you can tell, this claim is very specific, detailing the process from start to finish.

  1. Hey Healy,

I really enjoyed this post. It is very succinct and clearly explains what claim #1 is all about. I think to improve this you could talk about the patent in general a little more but that may be for a different assignment. Really nice job.

  2. Thanks for the numbered list! Unlike in the patent, this cogently describes the major steps of Claim 1 and makes it much less overwhelming to understand.

  3. Hi Healy,

Great job on the post. Very concise and clear. The entire patent document is extremely long. I'm glad you have a summarized claim 1 that I can read and understand immediately.

  4. Your use of bullet points is very effective and properly breaks down the different contentions of the claim. Thanks for keeping it short and sweet!

  5. Way to sum up everything quickly and concisely in just a few bullet points. The points really narrow down everything and make the post very easy to read. As a small suggestion, maybe next time add more detail as to the wording of the patent and the language that was used. Even using sub-bullets to highlight points would be useful. But other than that, looks good. Thanks!
